TEACHING STATEMENTS

Statements and philosophies that describe how I teach

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT

My teaching philosophy is inspired by my research studying close relationship dynamics and social support processes. One of the main themes from close relationships research is how people can thrive when they believe their relationships are loving and supportive. Knowing that others will be available or that others accept you for who you are gives people the security and confidence to work towards their goals. I strive to create a supportive learning environment where students can grow and have the confidence to push themselves. I have three main goals that contribute to the supportive learning environment in my classes: (a) have students make personal connections to the course material, (b) make sure I am available to and supportive of my students, and (c) continuously invite feedback from my students for how to improve my courses so they can thrive.

DIVERSITY STATEMENT

In my teaching, mentoring, and research, it is imperative for me to be conscious and inclusive of those from diverse backgrounds, including women, BIPOC, the LGBTQ+ community, disabled, first generation students, and low income. Especially because my research focuses on how social processes changes according to different cultural values, incorporating diversity and promoting belonging for everyone is a mission I prioritize and am constantly looking to improve upon.
